Teaching the Sounds

Teacher showing students the sound 's' in the Phonics Lessons

You want your students to achieve letter-sound mastery, producing the sound as quickly as they can tell you their own name. Our no-prep Phonics Lessons deliver every step of learning the sounds, from the introduction of the sounds and their representing letters to at-their-fingertips mastery with our five-step process.

Follow our five-step process for introducing and mastering each sound:

Step 1: Get It Right
Use videos to demonstrate the correct pronunciation of the 44 sounds in an English, Australian or American accent.
Step 2: Tune In
Discuss the sounds in real words (for example: “Is the ‘sh’ of shed in the first, second or third position? Where do we usually find the ‘sh’ letters in a word?”).
Step 3: Recognise
Identify the letter(s) associated with the sound.
Step 4: Speed Read
Improve accuracy and speed of sound recall using fluency drills.
Step 5: Play Phonics Hero Games
Practise the sounds with the Phonics Hero interactive games.

Teaching Blending

With a library of over 3,700 words and 2,400 sentences, you’ll never get stuck thinking of the best words for your lesson. Your phonics lesson is structured for you; we break the words into sounds and provide pictures to grow vocabulary and aid comprehension. Speed-reading activities then build fluency and confidence before students move to sentences.

Step 1: Blending
Your class practises blending single words with phonics and picture support.
Step 2: Speed Read
Improve reading fluency with quick-fire reading practice.
Step 3: Nonsense Word Reading
Practise decoding with non-words like ‘fep’ or ‘hup’.
Step 4: Play Phonics Hero Games
More whole-class practice with the Phonics Hero interactive games.

Teaching Segmenting

Once children have become confident with blending, it’s time to reverse the process and spell words with the target sounds. Our structured no-prep Phonics Lessons guide children through learning to spell with phonics:

Step 1: Segmenting
Your class practises segmenting words using our five-step process: say the word, stretch it, count the sounds, represent the sounds, and check it looks right!
Step 2: Word Sorts
Children practise identifying the correct spelling choice for a phoneme, e.g. ‘oi’ vs ‘oy’.
Step 3: Play Phonics Hero Games
More whole-class practice with the Phonics Hero interactive games.

Teaching Tricky Words

Tricky words are harder to learn and harder to teach. You can launch a phonics lesson that takes children step-by-step through reading and spelling tricky words, with built-in differentiation to suit every learner.

Applying Learning with Sentences

For both decodable and tricky words, teachers can build on children’s learning by switching to sentences. Our ‘word support’ feature helps guide students if they get stuck on reading or spelling a particular word.

Differentiate Your Lesson at Every Step
